In 2021, following the death of a seal named Freddie from a dog attack, Mary Tester co-founded Thames Seal Watch. The Thames, a river once thought to be biologically dead, is inhabited by about 3,500 seals and porpoises, some travelling as far west as Hammersmith, Chiswick and beyond.
At our monthly meeting on Tuesday 13th October, Mary will tell us about the society’s partnerships with the British Divers Marine Life Rescue and how the charity she founded lobbies the UK government and DEFRA to strengthen legal protections for marine mammals and criminalise seal harassment under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.
